Magic City Seams Jr (MCS Jr) is a program that introduces students to the fields of graphic, product, fashion, and textile design. In its first iteration as an in-person 8 week course, students designed up-cycled garments and learned how to use and maintain a sewing machine and serger. Prior to each practical training session, guests working in the associated fields gave brief lectures on their craft, process, and educational background. Bib & Tucker Sew-Op believes that the art and craft of sewing can do many things: reduce waste produced in the "fast fashion" industry, provide creative outlets to young people, but most importantly, sewing can be an income-generator at any point in a student's development. MCS Jr is meant to give insight to young people on how to turn their creative passions into viable careers.
MCS Jr went virtual in 2020 and will remain so in 2021. Students must have access to a sewing machine. Each MCS Jr session also comes with an opportunity to meet a different local designer, stylist, or boutique-owner. These sessions are a great chance for young people to learn more about careers related to sewing and fashion. Students will have access to Mrs. Mohammad via office hours to ask questions and clarify details from the tutorials.
Since 2017, Bib & Tucker Sew-Op has hosted an up-cycling competition called Recycled Runway. Any student wishing to compete in RR2021 must have participated in at least one MCS Jr session. For each session of MCS Jr, instructor Sonya Muhammad will provide a video tutorial through the Google Classroom platform.
