When Woodlawn High School reached out to Bib & Tucker Sew-Op because the teaching farm's interns were planning to put a barn quilt on the farm's barn, it felt like all of the Sew-Op's universes were happily colliding. First, Sew-Op shop manager, Viola Ratcliffe, was excited to put her art history training to work for the students with a lesson on Alabama quilting history and barn quilt symbolism. Then, it seemed clear that these students would have some powerful thoughts on this year's March Quilts theme of Environmental Justice! Viola visited the students today and to get them thinking about pattern, shape and color, she had them make quilt blocks for this year's March Quilt. After Viola's presentation, one student called her mother and asked her to bring her grandmother's quilt to the farm to show the group. The students had such a great time that they've asked Viola to return to help them with their barn quilt design. Stay tuned!
