Last year, the Sew-Op was approached by UAB's ArtPlay and the McWane Science Center about the two year project, Words Are Our World, funded by PNC Bank. The project aims to increase the vocabulary of pre-schoolers so that they enter school with more words under their belts. So how is the Sew-Op involved? We are making fabric words that children will be able to hold and touch as they learn them. So far, Sew-Op'ers have made such words as, "TRANSPARENT", "CAMOUFLAGE", and "LIZARD". We will be making these words each month for the duration of the project. This is our first manufacturing contract and we think it will tie in nicely with our Community Health Innovation Awards project, Woodlawn Sewing Training. It is exciting to see our work in the above video!
Bib & Tucker Sew-Op is a sewing co-op located at the convergence of Woodlawn, Crestwood North and Avondale.
