NOVEMBER 29, 2016 #GIVINGTUESDAY 29 REASONS TO GIVE TO BIB & TUCKER SEW-OP
1. WOODLAWN SEWING TRAINING: to date this is our biggest achievement. In December 2015 we were awarded $13,000 to create a pilot sewing training and in November 2016, our four Woodlawn Sewing Trainees donated the fruits of their labor (10 soft-goods therapy tools) to the Occupational Therapists at UAB Highlands' Acute Care for Elders unit. 2. QUARK or Quilting Activity Resource Kit: a Bib & Tucker product that teaches math skills through quilting activities 3. Summer Camps! 4. The March Quilts 5. Our Members: every Tuesday, some of the loveliest and most talented women get together to sew and talk (no topic is too controversial) and we highly encourage you to make a trip to the shop one Tuesday to meet some of these incredible women. 6. Annual Holiday Shows: our next one is coming up on Sunday, December 11th from 2 to 4PM. 7. Bib & Tucker Sew-Op is a creative community space. 8. We are at the intersections of some of Birmingham's most up and coming neighborhoods: Woodlawn, Avondale and Crestwood. 9. Our beautiful, unique quilts: it is hard to say where a design for a quilt comes from because it is often a collective effort at the shop. From the choice of fabric colors and patterns to the block designs, sizes and complexity, sometimes there will be disagreement but never has a member not liked the final product and we feel certain you will love them as much as we do. 10. Our classes - and stay tuned in 2017, we plan on offering exponentially more opportunities to learn at the Sew-Op! 11. Ms. Annie says, "we cut up fabric while we cut up". 12. Our commitment to preserve the craft of sewing 13. Diversity: now more than ever, we are proud of the variety of backgrounds represented through our membership. 14. The Sew-Op always offers a positive distraction. Avoiding doing the dishes or laundry? Come on down and sew with us! 15. A good place to take a break from your husband/wife/children and who knows? It might just be a happy break for them as well! 16. A good place to practice your teaching skills. Do you have an idea for a class you'd like to teach? Get in touch and find out how easy it is to utilize the space. 17. Ms. Annie says, "we bring smiles to people who don't have them". 18. Aside from the sewing, sometimes there's dancing and singing 19. The fabric flashcards we make for PNC Bank's "Words Are Our World" early literacy program, co-produced by UAB's ArtPlay and McWane Science Center. 20. Most (of our) sewing projects will teach you patience and acceptance. 21. It's a good place to conquer your fears: of the rotary cutter; of matching points; of seam allowances; of shyness. 22. The projects we work on are a good way to learn math. 23. We are a place to learn free-motion quilting: when you draw with your sewing machine. 24. Crafts and Design: sewing isn't just quilting. Pinterest is our friend and we know how to use it! Spend some time with our members and you'll learn a lot about design, color, pattern, shape and how they all work together to make something truly unique. 25. Sewing is therapeutic and though most of the work we do on Tuesdays is loud and boisterous, there is a rhythm that can be obtained and many have been known to reach the zone while hand-stitching a binding on a quilt. The calm amidst the chaos. 26. Our programming offers stimulation and fellowship. Our members have truly become a family and there is always room for extra branches on this family tree. 27. Our short-arm sewing machine: for now we can finish your quilt for you and eventually we hope to rent time on the machine. 28. Mama Glo's muffins: no doubt about it, you just have to try them for yourself. 29. Ms. Annie: all of our members are invaluable, but the idea to have a weekly sewing group was Ms. Annie's idea and she remains our longest-running supporter. Stop by sometime and say hello.
